What’s Up? 16″x20″, oil over silkscreen and photo and board, $400 |
This is a piece I started two years ago when I was taking photography (and so had access to a darkroom) and was working to integrate photography, silkscreen, and text (I was writing a lot of letters and journal entries in my paintings). There were a few of these that I liked, but never felt they were “finished.” I worked back into this one the other day with oil and am loving it. I pulled out a bunch of others from that same period and plan to start working on them too. |

This is a painting of the old viaduct above 72nd Street at Riverside/the West Side Highway. It’s a gorgeous walk along the river side, with great views of New Jersey and the bridges. There are ball fields there and people walking dogs/biking by. There’s a great photo, and lots more information about “the old Miller viaduct” on Forgotten New York – just scroll to the bottom of that page. |

Waves 1, 2′x4′, acrylic on canvas, [sold]
Waves 2, 2′x4′, acrylic on canvas [sold] |
This is a painting I was working on for about a year, it started with some abstract shapes, then writing a journal entry on the canvas about being picked for a subway “random bag check.” I added a vertical wide white stripe (semi-transparent) and then didn’t know what to do with it. It sat around for about a year and then one day I started doodling in a journal and realized it would be a great way to complete the painting. The blue on top is a combination of that doodle and some an image from a silkscreen series I was doing for counting the Omer this year. This shot is the left hand side of a diptych, the right hand side is below (shots of them together, and installed, are on Flickr). |

Green, 3′x3′, oil on canvas, $800 |
And now, for something completely different. I don’t usually do portraits, and obviously this isn’t strictly a portrait, but it has interested me enough that I want to do some more in this vein. |

Bridge 12′x4′, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, [sold] |
This painting started off as a charcoal sketch, and then evolved with very thin washes of acrylic – mostly white, with little touches of color added in the final layers only. |

Bridge 22′x4′, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, $600 |
I was working on this painting at the same time as the one above (this one was slightly earlier), it also started off as a charcoal sketch, and then evolved with very thin washes of acrylic – mostly white, but with significantly more color added in earlier layers. |

Fields, 2′x4′, oil and acrylic on canvas, $600 |
This painting started out with a very different life. Originally it was a painting of the subway bridge that you could see from the Brooklyn Artist’s Gym window (before they moved to the other side of the building). All that’s left of that original is the cream colored base. The three rectangular drawings inside the painting were all sketches from inside that studio. The top, blue/grey layer is oil, the rest is acrylic. I think I’m going to have to re-shoot this one with better lighting – the photo really doesn’t do it justice. |
